Our Owl Babies Room an a typical day

It is a sunny day as mummy pushes me up the path towards the entrance. Mummy bends down to open the gate and I can see all the sparkly mobiles twinkling in the sun. As we approach the door I see Emily waving at me with a big smile. As mummy takes off my coat and shoes, she tells Emily what lovely fun I had last night in the bath with my new bubble toy and how I squealed with delight.

Mummy puts things in my cubby hole and kisses me goodbye as I wriggle away to get my breakfast. I love breakfast which Emily makes for me. I get to sit in a wooden chair where I can look around at all the coloured ribbons dangling from the beams and listen to the soft music while I eat my fruity porridge. Sometimes I have toast too, that is cut into lovely shapes for me. Today my bib is very messy as I only had one feed bottle in the night and was quite hungry. Laura takes it off for me – she is always smiling and is now making funny sounds and faces which I try and copy – she is very funny.

Still laughing, Laura carries me through the gate to the soft area where I have spotted a tall tube with colours and bubbly things moving around. Laura puts me on a lovely squishy cushion where I can watch the lights and play with the lights and switches. I am getting very clever at this. All I do is press a button and the light comes on. I am learning what up and down is and I am getting really good at looking at my arms in the air, which makes Emily smile.

Some of my other friends are starting to arrive and joining me in the soft area. Laura starts to tidy up some of the toys ready for our “circle time” which is really good. Today I am listening to some space music. I love this as I get to practice waving my arms and nodding my head. Laura is getting out some beautiful scarves. These are great and I get to put them over my head and see all the different colours in front of my eyes.

We are learning some of our nursery rhymes too. We sing about a man who falls off a wall and cracked his head, but I really like hey diddle diddle which is really funny. As the palate and spoon ran away together, I get to hold the plate, which Emily says is round. She repeats this a lot, so that I can learn its name. I get to hear lots of things so that they can stay in my head. A friend has taken my scarf from my hand so Eve picks me up as I start to cry. We share the scarf with each other and soon we are both happy again. Eve then takes me over to some treasure baskets to explore with another of my friends. As I sit looking at the basket, I reach inside to see what I can feel. I move my hand away, something is very cold in there and I pull it out to see what it is. It is called an “ice cube” and it has bits inside of it with different colours. I put it back. I reach inside again and feel something very soft. I like this feeling and pull it out. I then put it in my mouth and Laura say that this is a cube as well. This has got a pattern on it and Laura says it is black and white. We have lots of black and white stripy/swirly things as well. And in our changing area we have some black and white patterns as well. Speaking of which – wooosp. I think its time for me to go and visit there! Emily is my “key person” and she looks after me when I need a nappy changing. She also puts together my own book to share with mummy and daddy and show all the things I get to explore and learn about.

I am being very good at having my nappy changed so that I can go and explore outside quickly. Emily helped me put my shoes  and coat on, and tells me that outside they are playing in the water tray. As I sit beside the water tray I can see some spiky objects in it. I think they have come from the trees. By opening my fingers wider, I reach out to grab one, but miss and splash my face. The water si cold and frightens me, but Laura reassures me and wipes my face dry. I reach over and try again, but this time I laugh as I quite like the feeling now. Laura keeps saying “splish splash, splish splash”. It sounds very funny, so I try and make the noise myself. Laura tells me about the other things in the water, but the pine cone is my favourite. Some of my friends have their hands in some white fluffy stuff and now it si all over their hands and arms. They looked very funny, like when daddy has a shave. Oh it’s time for my bottle, so Laura picks me up, takes my shoes off and puts them in my cubby hole. A lovely warmed bottle of milk is waiting for me and Laura helps me guzzle it all up. I am getting good at holding the bottle myself now, both hands! I feel a bit sleepy thou after a hard morning’s work, so Laura puts me in my pram with my special teddy from home so that I can have a little nap. The teddy has a special smell which reminds me of mummy and daddy. I have some other toys too from home and I have a special basket that I can play with in the afternoon. For my rests, Emily takes me into the garden and pushes me around humming to me until I drop off to sleep.

As I opened my eyes, I hear somebody crying. Eve is comforting a bigger girl in her arms as she has fallen on her bottom after practicing her walking. Over by the cots I can hear a lovely story tape for me to listen to. Emily comes over and says hello to me. She then takes me over to the story tape which is playing about a little girl with a red cloak. One of the feely bags is put by me, which Emily helps me to feel inside. Wow! I think that there is a little doll with a bright red cloak! I hold her in my hand. There is a fluffy animal that feels very soft too, and a book to go with the story which has lots of pictures in it. I love stories. Mummy reads me a story at night-time, and daddy does really funny voices, just like Emily is doing right now.

As I lift my head up, I can see someone moving around in the kitchen area. I think she must be making our dinner. I can smell something lovely. I start to cry as Emily explains that it is nearly dinnertime and that she is going to change my nappy before we eat. I’m a bit upset because I want to eat now and don’t want to have my nappy changed. So Emily sings me a song about a sheep to make me feel better. Then I go through the gate again to my comfy chair. There are three type of chairs, for me and my friends. The bigger girls and boys who can put their feet on the floor sit on a chair at the table. My chair has a lovely tray on top, all for myself.  I am ready now with my bib on and am starting to eat my lunch of home-made spinach cous-cous and fruit chunks. Sometimes I have yoghurt. It is very tasty and Emily makes me laugh as she helps me to try and feed myself with the spoon. I can’t wait to use it all by myself, then will be able toe at my dinner as quick as I like. I am beginning to use my fingers for my bits of apple and pear, but sometimes they fall on the floor.

Now that I am full it is time for me and my friends to have a sleep. The curtains are drawn and some beautiful music is played. I can see the rays of the sun peeping through the gaps and through the beams making pretty shadows on the walls., as Emily gently pushes me back and forth. As I wake up, I can see that people have come to collect some of my friends. I get to stay and play all day with my friends. I like playing Peekaboo with the teddy and Emily when I wake. She makes it into a game so that teddy can be put safely back in my basket. Some of my friends who have already finished their sleep are just finishing “little voices”. I can hear them playing with some of the “jingly bells” and wooden block to go with the funky music. Yesterday in “little voices” time I practiced finding different parts of my body whilst singing a jelly song.

Its time again for a snack,. I am going to try a rice cake, and practice using a beaker for water. This is a bit tricky, but Laura hels me. Some of the other boys and girls are outside on the swings. So Laura takes me to where I can play and watch them on the fluffy blanket that has some toy cups and saucers on it. As I look up I can see that dangly things are glistening in the sun> Emily starts to sing the song about Polly and her teapot, which ahs funny monkey actions to go with it. It’s time to go back inside now as my nappy needs a change. Emily then takes me through the gate and gently puts me down, where I roll onto my front and back. I am getting quite good at pulling myself up on the toy box, so Emily move me gently to the soft cushions. I have spotted a bright red toy car and begin to move towards it. I begin to notice things around me and Emily is saying that there is a red treasure box for me to explore. We have lots of treasure boxes with interesting things in. The safari treasure box is my favourite with lots of animals and textured fabrics in it.

Well its time to fill up again and this time I get to have tuna and avocado, and fruit puree for afterwards. I wasn’t sure about the avocado, but I get to taste lots of different new things and mummy thinks I am a good eater. Eating makes me sleepy and Emily just pops me in my pram for a short nap with teddy, and gently rocks me back and forth. Waking up I hear lots of chattering  and lots of faces coming in and out of the door. Some of my friends have started to go home and the adults are talking to Eve about the day. I sometimes get a bit upset when I wake, but Emily gently bounce me up and down as she gets me out and puts me down in the soft area again with a special basket. Inside I have lots of stories from home. I have some cotton reels on a string and a  fluffy dog with a squeaky nose. As I look around to see what the other boys and girls are playing with I hear a familiar voice and look up to see my daddy. He reaches down to me and Emily tells him how clever I was using my cup today. She tells him all the lovely things I have been doing and what I have eaten. After getting my coat and shoes on, daddy and I wave goodbye to everybody. I am quite tired no and might just fall asleep in my comfy car seat.
