A day at Naturegarten

As I race up the path a squirrel scampers into the bushes. Last week we had some ducks waddling in them. I think they had “escaped” from the canal.  The door is opened and Melanie greets my Dad and is asking how my swimming lesson went last night.  As I chat Daddy hangs my coat up and I put my slippers on, tucking my shoes neatly under the bench. Giving Daddy a big hug, I pop through the gate ready to find my friends.  Some are finishing off their breakfast so I go over to the building-blocks and join in finding out how many blocks I need to measure my height.  Sarah reminds me to count the blocks slowly to find out my height.  Gosh! it’s tidy-up time already and out come the spots for us to sit on.  To begin with we listen to music about the rainforest. Every one has gone quiet as we all concentrate hard to hear the changes in speed and volume.  Very slowly, Gail passes round the rain-shaker for us all to move. Next we learn about number 3 from our ‘Ten Town’ song collect and the sounds ‘p, n and s’.  Each week we focus on different phonic sounds and get to bring in an object.  In my bag I have a plane, so I jump up to get it.

My tummy is starting to rumble so I’m glad it is snack. The bathrooms have magic taps and the taps go off all by themselves.  It’s tomatoes and cucumber today and I have some milk to wash it down with.

Now I want to go out, so I have to collect my shoes and sunhat and take them to the backdoor ready to go out.  My new shoes are great and I have learnt to do them up all on my own now.   Over in the gazebo there are some fabrics floating from it.  ‘What makes them move?’ I ask and ‘where does the wind blow from?’.  Mummy says I ask lots of questions, but the staff usually help me find an answer.  Melanie suggests hanging different objects up to see which blow the best.  I want to see if the plastic barrels we roll in will blow.  It is very big to dangle from the gazebo, so we all talk about how we could test its ability to be blown over instead. Over in the sandpit some of my friends are hunting for some letters that have been hidden there and on the decking some are sitting in fancy dress clothes having a tea-party.  Justin is here today and has come to take a group to the allotment area.  We have had our first crop of courgettes and onions, which I helped plant and pick this year.  Going down the path I notice a rabbit on the filed and rush to the fence, but it vanishes into the hedge.

Inside I am now sitting in my ‘Me Time’ group, which is a quiet time we have with our ‘key person’ for a chat.  Gail has a tray of objects for us to look at, feel and smell today, I’m not sure I like all of these, but Gail explains that’s okay and that not every one likes the same things.   Over to the bathroom now, I better go to the loo before lunch as I’m on first sitting whilst the other group have a story.  Tracey has made us salmon & broccoli bake today with swirly pasta in it.  I love my food and usually have seconds, today though I just want to leave room for some banana.

After lunch I go into the quiet room for a rest. No longer needing a sleep, I lie down quietly listening to the music and looking at a book, so that other children can sleep if they need to.

Some children go home after lunch and some others arrive so we have a short ‘hello’ time on the spots again before we start the afternoon’s exploration.  I think I will go into the workshop to see what Janet is doing.  It is rather messy in here today, so I put on a red apron to protect my cloths.  On the floor there is a tray of sticky noodles and plastic apparatus.  I crouch down and pick up the scissors.  I discover that I can cut up the noodles into tiny pieces with them, and using a spoon, scoop them up to transfer to a bowl in the middle.  At the graphics table I am struggling to use the paper scissors like some of my friends, but these noodles are easier to cut. Over at the easel a girl is using an ear-bob to paint a picture.  But what is that strange smell coming from the table? I’ll go and investigate. Picking up the freshly made play-dough I take a sniff, it smells like pizza. Looking closely I can see green bits in it and I think I smell garlic. My friends tell me they have added garlic and herbs to the dough today.  Last week we made chocolate Playdough - mmmmm!

After another snack of pears and oranges, some exercise on the trampette, drawing at the graphics table and some singing and rhyme, it is time for me to go home.  Aunty Carol is collecting me today so Gail asks her for the ‘password’.  I make sure I have all my pictures and bag and wave good-bye to my friends who are staying to play for a bit longer.
